Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
in a word, disappointing.
the plan: go out at a conservative 5:52-5:55 pace for the first three miles and then, with the serious hills behind me, increase my pace to finish under 36 min (5:47/mi); miles four and five were to be run near 5:45, a sub 5:40 mile 6 didn't seem unrealistic, so long as i didn't go out too hard, and i'd just desperately hang on for the last .2mi.
and...everything went according to plan for five miles. i went through mile three averaging exactly 5:55, and covered miles four and five at a sub 5:50 pace, which left me churning along in extremis with just one mile to run.
a short time later, the discomfort i'd been precariously managing for over thirty minutes suddenly and significantly spiked, and that was it. i had no answer. i stepped off the goddamned course and bent over, hands on knees, and sucked sweet, sweet air, and after a few seconds continued on, defeated, to the finish line. its hardly worth noting, but i did manage a kick over the last 400m or so that shocked/frightened spectators.
training for the 2012 Capitol 10k starts now.
