BEST DAY EVER!! i sat around thru the first like 8 races, having a hard time being patient and not really that interested in actually racing. Caroline wanted to bail; I was feeling kinda lonely. decided to warm up on my own while caroline figured out what she was doing. put in my ipod and went for a jog in the woods along the FHS cross country course. it was absolutely beautiful, reminded me why i love running.
when i stepped on the track, the nervous girl next to me asked what I was trying to run. "13 flat would be ideal," I said. On my other side, I recognized 2 girls from Sidwell, one of whom alessa ran with in the 2mile at sidwell the other day. as the starter gave us instructions, i made up my mind to hang on with eva and julie (the 2 sidwell girls) for as long as I could and see what happened.
I never got tired. Sarah Spergel was in the corner of the track, telling me to "have faith in yourself" on every lap. Leah counted down for me, and the laps flew by. I was consistent(ish) in pace: 3:08 at the 800, 6:20 at the mile, etc. I was right in the pack with eva and julie, letting them do all the work. my legs never really felt tired, I just kept going, eyes on the maroon jerseys in front of me. with 400 to go, I started to step it up, and so did eva. we fought for 200 meters. entering the curve, she faltered for a second. without even thinking, I said to her, "come on girl, you got this, i need you!" she immediately responded, pulling ahead by a stride. when she saw I wasn't with her, she said "you can do this! go faster! stay with me!" so I did. we ran stride for stride, neck and neck, until the last 50 m. She pulled ahead in the end - I wish I had a sprinter kick - but i fought all the way through the line. it was hard, but I managed to talk as soon as the race was over. leah brought me water, which was amazing :) I also PR-ed by 41 seconds from the last time I ran the 2mile (13:19), and that had been a 9 second pr too. It's exciting to see how much I can do! until a couple of years ago, this would have been a school record! AAHHHH!!! I wonder how much more I have in my legs! how much lower can I get it? THIS IS SO FUN I'M SO HAPPY!!!! :)
