Eugene Marathon

May 1, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 39-55

Comments:
Hadn't trained very much and had no long runs over 12.5 miles so I went out at a slow pace of about 9:30 and caught up to the 9:09 (4 hour) group at 12 miles. Stayed behind group for a few miles (2:00 half) and then ran with group for one mile then left them at about mile 15. Ran 4-5 miles at about 8:30 pace (too fast) then began to slow at mile 20. Calf started to feel funny so when 4 hour group caught up I let them go. Still felt good and thought I'd take it easy for a bit and then run them down again with 5k left. Calf cramped bad (left) and I walked long thru the water station making a 10:35 mile. Calf kept cramping and then went into hamstring and I had to stop and hold it to get it out of spasm. (19 min mile) at mile 23. Couldn't go any faster than 3 or 4 mph without it coming back. Didn't ever bonk or hit wall - just couldn't run thru cramps. Finished at 4:20 again in total disappointment. Had I not cramped I would have been close to 4 hours - but I'm sure it would have been hard to hang with that group as I was already losing time to them at 21 miles. Should have used salt tablets and should have stayed behind 4 hour pace group. Those fast miles got my HR up to 163 which was well over 90% of maximum and guaranteed the lactic acid build up that probably led to the cramps. Then again, after only going 12.5 for my longest pre-race run, I hung in pretty well. I didn't train anywhere near as hard or long as I had for the Big Sur, so it was kind of bonus to be able to run a marathon on only 25 or so miles a week. It was a very flat easy course on a cool perfect day. All in all, it was a great weekend as I got to spend it with Casey and Autumn and hang out with Chase.
