Exercise Type: Swim
Comments:
i realize that these read kind of out of order, but i felt i should number them in the usual triathlon way i.e. swim, bike, run.
SWIM: the race started at 8am, which was nice because it wasn't too early. they closed the transition area 20 minutes before start time so everyone had to wait around by the edge of the lake/ pond thing. i didn't really feel like swimming a warmup, since i had just run, so i stretched and did some short drills. i got into the water, along with maybe 80 other people a few minutes before the start and stood in mud, which sometimes reached mid-calf. it was gross, but i didn't really care.
the swimming started, and i was very boxed in. which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, because it prevented me from going out too fast and also helped me to swim in a straight line. but i think i could've gone faster, without using much more energy, had i been up front. but i was hesitant because i'm not as confident in my swimming, so i stayed back. possibly a mistake, definitely a learning experience. i didn't really start to feel tired until the last 100 (it was actually yards, btw), and i just finished smooth and easy.
T1: the transition from swim to bike, as the results would show, was atrocious. it took me 1:46 to put on socks and bike shoes and get out of the transition area. most of the top guys were going through in 20-30 seconds. i think this will improve with experience and planning.
