Firecracker "Race"

July 4, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 79, incredibly humid

Comments:
Wore my NCAC singlet (h/t Josh Budman, Nick Kisley, Tyler Knabb). It is amusing to me that 10 weeks ago I ran a 5k almost 3 minutes faster than I ran today. Granted, that was on a track, but still. I forgot about how the course is entirely uphill and downhill.

17:48 (5:15, 6:11, 6:22 for 1.1). Last week when I was thinking about this "race" I thought about running 16 flat because it seemed reasonable. Then as I approached the race I realized I had zero desire to actually run it because I've only been running for 4 weeks again and have not run a step at sub-5:30 pace since the moment I got hurt at conferences. I felt ok for the first mile but then it caught up with me and I started basically jogging because there was no reason to push it. Some guy tried to outkick me with 5 feet to go but I think I held him off when I started sprinting.

On one hand, it's a little disconcerting to me that I ran almost a minute slower per mile than I did during outdoor. If this were my best effort then I would have a loooooong way to go to achieve my goals for this fall. On the other hand, it's July fucking Fourth and championship season starts in 4 months. I gave up after a mile (it's nice to give yourself that kind of mental break in one race a year). I wish I could say this was 10% effort but it was probably more like 25%. In the days leading up to today I neglected to do any of the preparations that result in good races. This was essentially a lame workout.

Now that I think about it some more, I really don't care what the time was or anything, it just pisses me off to lose to as many people as I did. I run one race a year at home and because it comes in the summer, it's always mediocre.

I can't believe I spent so much time on this log entry. Time to go have fun.
