Village Zig Zag into 5k Route

October 17, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Sunny, Cold and very windy by the lake

Comments:
First run in a long time. I ran with my mp3, and just counted the number of songs I listened to as a distance gauge. (12 by the way). I think this run proves that a. People can always run farther than they think they can. I mean, if I haven't run in who knows how long and can at least keep my legs going for 53 minutes, well, a decently non-sedentary person should be able to run longer than 10 minutes.

b. When in doubt, go slow. I started this run at a little faster than a shuffle, and it let me go for a goodly amount of time. The last stretch I was pushing a little bit more, and that felt good, and I was able to run the finishing stretch quite fast (relatively speaking), without having to worry about being super tired. Running longer is better than running fast. (I hear the voices of a thousand letsrunners crying out in distress, but I also hear Coach Falk talking about when he trained for his marathon he would run really, really slow. Running always trumps not running.

c. The Camp Luther 5k course is ridiculously hilly. The 1st mile lulls you into complacency and then the 2nd mile strikes hard, while the third mile adds its own ups and downs. I can only imagine racing it. There are enough hills in the second mile that they're hard to run at an easy pace. Racing them? You'd have to be in kick butt shape and have really strong legs.

Should I invite Ellie to run with me tomorrow? Check yes or no...
