October 6, 2012 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Cloudy, cool
Comments:
It was so strange to come back and run the same meet a year later, older and faster. It was even more odd to be at a running event without Zeke around. I had had two excellent nights of sleep and didn't even feel Potomac in my legs. I feasted at the team dinner the night before. I woke up, had a piping hot bowl of oatmeal and my Dad drove me to the bus, saying, "Relax when you run, you'll do better." Easier said than done--especially to a non-runner. On the bus ride I calmed myself, listening to Sonny Rollins' "Saxophone Colossus", and John Coltrane's "Blue Train." After the jog, my nerves returned, but I was put in the appropriate competitive mindset after witnessing Tristan's victory. I went through mile 1 in around 5:51. After the hill, Anthony yelled nearly the exact same thing he yelled last year, "They're going to be tired, you have to be ready to move! How many of these guys can you get?" Last year I passed two people after that point. This time I passed 18. I came in 23th, not far behind Timmy, who had a brilliant finish. The day before, I had said that I would try to stay with him the whole time, but he went out faster than I had planned for and though I made up a lot of ground, his finish was too quick. I did have a lifetime best, but as I told Anthony, I still feel like there is more; I still know that I can run faster than that. But overall, one of the best days I've had in a while. I was just happy to be on this team, and happy to be me.
