Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Hot - High 80's
Comments:
From the go, we made a fairly decent descent down to No Hands (:16+) and up and over to Hwy 49 (:55). A quick refill, but didn't even fill both my bottles fully as I *fully* expected there to be H20 at ALT. We made our way through poison oak down to LQ, along LQ, up to BB and We made an honest effort over to ALT.
A little more thirsty at this point, but much to our chagrin, the freakin' water was off (STILL irritated by these *folks* keeping the water off, now, for months!).
Crap, can we make it to the river? Seemed unlikely, but man what a God-send it was bumping into some horseback riders just before the WTC/WS Trail intersection. They "hooked us up" with a 1/2L of water each and this gave us enough *mental confidence* that we could make it......Or so we thought.
Sucks having to conserve, but still trying to put in an honest effort. We slowly inched our way up to GG, and I felt pretty good on the descent to the river. We doused, douched, and dipped and soon enough, with the our blood pressure now having DRAAPED significantly, we climbed back up to GG.
Its like a light-switch shut off for me here. ProbZ more mental than anything - trying to wrap my brain around the task at hand - but I just couldn't climb. My legs felt shot and body felt hot, but I used Joe as a motivator to keep on it. "He's not giving up, I CAN'T!"
Once the trail leveled some, I felt just OK - although, my lower abdomen started cramping, painfully so. This slowed me down some, but thankfully, Joe waited up and insisted I lead.
I think this helped me mentally as I didn't feel "left behind" and with him "pacing me", I started to get into an OK rhythm.
We hit ALT, and with blind, unrealistic faith, I turned the water on, hoping for some miracle (but not expecting anything). STILL OFF! DEHCK'S!
We lounged for a little bit. And then it was go time. Joe took off, while I shuffled.
Such good mental training, but boy, it sucks in the moment. Had bouts of good running, followed by bouts of not-so-good running. The stomach cramps returned and I had to walk for a minute. This would continue on and off.
This section drug on foreeeeever and I woefully split a :43. I found Joe laying down at BB and after sitting myself for a good :5, we got back to work.
This was the last water-less stretch, but one that included a climb to get there. The descent was fine. LQ sucked. I fell back, again, stomach cramps *jabbing* me in the gut like Rocky in the 16th round vs Apollo Creed. I walked. And walked.
And then, got so thirsty, that I walked my ass down to the river and started putting water in my mouth just to feel that sensation of liquid on the tongue. I drank maybe 5oz. 2nd time I've ever had to do this.
Found Joe, again, laying on the ground just before the turnoff for the climb up '49. I expected to walk the whole thing, but found myself running almost all of it. Very slow, but WS worthy!
Joe caught up just after the gravel stretch and we pretty much ran together the rest of the way to '49.
The water tasted so good, but I felt done. Brain off, legs off, EVERYTHING OFF!
But, lounging around for :15, the fluids kicked in. The calories kicked in and soon enough, I was climbing pretty decent out of '49.
The flats were a different story. Cramps again! Joe caught up and pushed the descent well. I tried to go with him, but the stomach cramps prevented that.
I tried to manage them the best I could, but barely to any avail.
Found Joe at No Hands and ground it out up to Robie. He got a good 2min on me. His forward engagement allowing him to easily pull away from me. Lotta work to do this camp!
