DC/MD Championships

November 8, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Today was fantastic. I woke up naturally for the first time in a long time, having already slept 10 hours. I made sure that I had all of my warm clothes before leaving, only half of which I would end up using. When we got there, we ran the 2nd mile of the course, which proved incredibly helpful in visualization. I approached the starting line exited by the previous JV girls race, especially Abby Doroshow's ecstatic performance. In the first few hundred meters of the race, I was in the back of the pack, forcing me to spend my first half mile doing some tricky maneuvers to weave through the hoards and eventually catch up to Aidan K. I was relieved not to hear my 1 mile split, as I was then left to listen to my body instead of my time. Aidan and I worked together for the second mile, passing plenty of runners and trying to keep other hoppers in sight. At the 2 mile mark, I threw off my gloves and took off. I took the beginning of the big hill tentatively, as that was where I hit the wall in my previous race. But no such pain occurred, so I continued speeding up, flying down the hill and using as much momentum as I had to corner the creek. After that, I went into full drive. I attacked the final hill and gave as much kick as I could at the finish (I didn't have much left at that point) and crossed the line at 21:46, a significant improvement from my 23:03 from two weeks ago. Not only was this a great way to end the season, but a good reminder that every race is different. Sometimes you will be plagued with incredible pain, and sometimes you'll be in comfort (that is, as much comfort that accompanies racing). My finishing exuberance and sadness over the end of the season fueled my next bits of running and cheering. I was impressed with all of the varsity boys performances, as always, but especially stunned by Tristan's resilience and ability to run faster than most people with access to oxygen, as well as Aidan taking up the slack and awing us. It was amazing to watch the varsity girls take first. You guys raced like the champions you are! After all the races, I went on a reasonably paced run across the creek and over the hills to the 2 mile marker to pick up my gloves, which had disappeared. No worries though, the run itself was worth it (next time i'm bringing a camera). Thanks for the great season guys.
