Flippin' Field House

December 12, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Today was surprisingly fun. I came into winter track with middle school benchmarks of practice and competition, so you can imagine my excitement when I ran what felt like a sluggish 800 just to find that I had PR'd by more than 20 seconds. When the relay started, Jacob got a little exited by the breakneck pace the top schools had set, so he followed it for as long as he could, causing him to run an awesome race with some fairly uneven splits. Christian ran an impressive race, pacing himself evenly and not getting at all discouraged by the competition. By the time it was my turn, I was a little cold (still not used to warming up and then waiting in line to run), so my first lap felt a little bit off. At this point, I think we were lapped, but I didn't really care. Like Anthony said, this was for experience, not performance. By my third lap, I was feeling pretty good, so I did what felt like kicking it up a notch, but was actually maintaining the same pace. I finished with a disappointingly large amount of energy left, but that didn't keep me from watching Lyle ramp it up and almost catch the team that was about 150 meters ahead of me.

I did the normal cool down, thinking that I was done for the day. However, because Jacob was having some quad issues and Sam wasn't there, Anthony put Lyle and I into the 4x400 B team with Sahil and Noah K. Lyle was a little sore and tired from his newly found talent, high jumping, but he was willing to run nonetheless. In fact, he started off.

Once again, despite Lyle's ridiculously long legs and running skill, we were left in the (literal) dust (seriously, track throat sucks), but that didn't damper our spirit. Anyways, Anthony told us to think of this as a workout. This time, I tried to stay warm until I ran, which I think worked. My first lap felt sharp and quick (I'm a big fan of the banked turns), but by my second lap I was tired, which caused me to have a less aggressive stride and transition from anaerobic to aerobic. I could have easily worked through it, but I wasn't in my Derwood, leave everything on the course/track mindset, not to mention these races are way shorter than 5k's, so pacing is tricky at first. No worries though, it's something that I look forward to working on in meets to come. By the way, great job Noah K in that last 4x400 leg! You gave that guy a run (haha, get it?) for his money.

This meet definitely proved a learning experience. I was a little concerned about the transition from Cross Country to Track and the slightly more divided team spirit that accompanies it. However, today I really got a sense of how tightly knit this team is, and temporarily sand-infested lungs is a price that I'm willing to pay for being a part of it!
