Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
I really had no idea what to expect for today's meet. I now know that's the only mindset one can have. After setting down our bags and watching the women's race-walk, we did a team warmup outside on the half-mile long path. We came back inside, stretched as a team while enjoying a Belber speech, and then most everyone started preparing for their race, that is, except for me Jessie, and Charlie. Because the 3000 was in so long, we hung around, cheered for all the runners, actually got homework done during a meet, and walked around enough to not stiffen up. With about an hour to go before our race, the three of us went outside, did 2 easy laps around the path, and after debating about doing a third, decided to go back in. We were then surprised to hear that we didn't actually have more than 45 minutes until our race, but actually had around 8. After completely chopping up and disregarding half of the usual warmup, I spiked up (I realized then that I had only taken the spikes out of one shoe, which caused a lot of stress) and we all did striders. By some miracle, we found ourselves at the starting line on time, and so did Anthony (his striders were comprised of him running to and fro his bags to spike up). I was definitely warmed up and full of Adrenaline when the race started, and ended up next to Anthony after 150 meters. However, he told me not to go out too exited and, after looking at the clock (which read around 38), I realized that I probably couldn't hold that pace. I backed off a bit, but stayed in second the whole race, which was unexpected. I'm glad I wore modified spikes on the track, because racing on that surface with just trainers would have been awful. I finished in at 11:16, which I'm very happy with, and hope to run something similar in the 3200 in the spring. One thing I'm not so happy about from today's race was my kick. After reviewing the race on video, I realize that I didn't start to accelerate until the last lap, and only truly kicked in the last 50 meters. I think it's just because I fear that I'll kick too early and lose my energy, because I know I have more than 200 meters of kick in me. Otherwise, I felt pretty good during the race; my form felt relaxed and I tried to keep a relatively painless expression. I look forward to racing head-to-head with someone in the spring, though, which will force me to be a little bit more focused. Everybody did a great job today, and the meet was super fun and relaxed, even if it was unstructured.
