Mudslide

October 8, 2016 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
First time at Glory Days! I couldn't picture the course at all, and then we got there and I realized that was because I didn't go last year. It was a really rainy, muddy, and gross day, but as usual, the team put even more energy into the races and it was really inspiring to see. I walked the warmup with other injured people, which was kind of sad because I really like warming up as a whole team. I was racing at 1:10 in a big group of hoppers which was nice, so we got to cheer for people for a while first. The weather was holding up for the first few races of the day, but by ours, the course was really getting slippery and kind of dangerous.

My race didn't go as well as I hoped, but it was still fun to run and get nice and muddy. The first mile I ran with Mia, but she was killing it and going very fast, so I let myself get dropped after that because I thought I'd die later on if I tried to keep up any longer. Middle mile was really hard. I had awful cramps and felt really gross and sick, so I slowed down a lot there. It's annoying because I think the hill in that mile really wouldn't have been bad normally, but I was feeling so awful that I just trudged up it. Third mile I didn't feel great, but much better than the second mile, and I just focused on getting to the finish because you can see it for probably the last 3/4 of a mile of the course. I think the best part of my race was my kick which I'm proud of because it's usually pretty weak. In that last 600ish meters, I tried to pick up the pace at every switchback, and on the final stretch I really sprinted and actually passed one girl and almost passed another one. I'm not sure if she beat me by a tiny bit or not, but we were basically neck and neck. I'm not happy with the time--it' 27 seconds slower than Salesianum which is a much harder course, but the conditions here were worse (I rolled each ankle multiple times in the mud) and I'm still nowhere close to being in shape, so it's annoying but I'll live :) So proud of everyone's attitude and XC grit. Special shoutout to Mia for killing it, Somo because it was her first XC race ever and first time running over 3 miles this season (!), everyone in the freshmen girls race for working together really well and because it was their first race for 2 or 3 of them, and to Nathaniel who ran around cheering for at least five of the races! And everyone else was amazing too! It makes me so happy at meets to see how committed everyone is to the team! Favorite moment of the day would have to be watching Anthony bound through high grass to get from one side of the course to the other to cheer for the freshmen girls race!
