MRI report - thickening and intermediate signal intensity of the achilles tendon most marked distally at the insertion... tendinosis of the achilles tendon with evidence of minimal partial-thickness tear of the deep fibers at the insertion
the good news - i directly asked dr. joy how bad my achilles looks... she said it looked better than she expected... i then asked her if i need to consider not running competitively anymore... she said no and that i should be able to recover and get back to running, with the understanding that my achilles is never going to be normal again (i resolved myself to this reality a long time ago)... the best part is that i finally have a doctor who is going to help me and give me treatment options (see below)
so here's the game plan... i am getting my first platelet rich plasma injection next wednesday... i am going to monitor my progress for 2-4 weeks after, and depending on results, i may get a second injection in 2-4 weeks... during these 2-4 weeks, i will likely continue with active release therapy with dr. zak, and of course all of the stretching and physical therapy exercises... from today, i hope to be running again in 4-6 weeks... once i start running, i will begin using transdermal nitroglycerin patches combined with the standard ART, PT, et al
my project until i start running again is to purchase and read an exercise physiology book and develop contrarian methods for training injury-prone distance runners (i.e. me)... i actually had some of these ideas going into this fall, but i was too infatuated with the kind of running i did in mammoth lakes to follow my original plan... that's how i lost sight of the plan, and that's probably why i got hurt
