Exercise Type: Swim
Comments:
This was fun! It was an ocean swim in Dorchester Bay. Water temp was about 66 degrees. Most pools are around 80. When I heard how cold it was I was just like "fuck me up fam" but it turned out to be alright.
My goal was to have the fastest swim in my age group (20-24), and according to the official results I did have the fastest swim by over a minute. That's weird because I was sure I saw a guy in my wave finish ahead of me by like 20 seconds but I guess his timing got messed up?? Idk. At the end of the day we look at what the results show.
Swimming in the ocean is notably different than a lake. The water is bit choppier which is kinda bothersome, but what really nagged me was the saltiness of the water. When I breathed I would frequently get water in my mouth that I would swallow because ya know, I'm racing, and that just isn't pleasant.
I don't think I could have done any better here. I improved my time by 2 minutes and 40 seconds from last summer which is astounding. However my pace was actually a few seconds slower per 100y than the half ironman I did, which is 1.2 miles, not .93 miles like the standard olympic distance.
While looking through the results I recognized this guy named Chris Satterthwaite. When I was in high school, Chris was a dominant all-american swimmer a few years older than me who swam at a rival school. He then went on to compete collegiately at Harvard (@SeanVirden this guy holds the Harvard record in the 100 free with a 42.99). My swim was 49 seconds slower than his today. If you had told me years back that I would only be 49 seconds slower than him in a 1500m swim today, I would have told you that you had lost your mind.
