IC Time Trial

August 25, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: *Emerges from a dark hole with a gasp* "I'm back!"

Comments:
So I haven't been very present at practice recently, and it's not because I was just feeling lazy or anything. I think a short(ish) explanation is needed here.
Where I've been:
So imagine you're a 17 year old lifeguard. You've been working at a pool for almost two months and are starting to feel comfortable there but don't quite know all the ins and outs yet. It's late August, and the pool manager is leaving for college soon which means another lifeguard (who also happens to be your older brother) is being taught how to take care of the pool. But then a problem arises. They realize that a day after the pool manager leaves your brother is going on vacation for a week, leaving no one to take care of the chemicals, water level, water temperature, scheduling, time sheets, and any pool-related problems. They have to find someone to take on the role of pool manager, and they have to decide quickly. Who will it be? The next morning you're setting up, bringing umbrellas to the tables around the pool when the manager asks you to come with him to pump room. You're interested because the pump room is where all the chemicals and filters and machines are kept, and no lifeguards are usually allowed back there. It's there that he breaks the news to you. You're nervous, but want to do well, so you listen intently and ask questions and do your best to understand. Most pool managers get a couple weeks of training before taking over the pool. You get one day. You remember everything that he tells you, but soon find that there simply wasn't enough time to learn about everything you needed to know. The next week you work very hard, getting to the pool early in the morning and staying late. Occasionally you wonder if it's legal for someone your age to be doing something like this. But it doesn't matter because you don't have any other options. You learn more about the pool as the days pass, and by the end of the week you're more confident with the job than you ever expected. Now your brother is back, and officially, you are no longer in charge. However, you know more than him about taking care of the pool after your week as manager and will need to teach him. But everything will start to settle back into a more relaxed routine now, and that's all you want.
Whew. Remind me to never write in second person again. I was planning on just writing a few sentences about my situation, but then it turned into that little monster.
Here's an actual description of the time trial.
IC Time Trial: The start was kinda weird because I was in the back, but by the time we reached the top of the gravel road I was the third girl with Grace and Ingrid right behind me. Grace eventually passed me, and I could've tried harder to stay with her, but I was struggling a lot on the second gravelly road before Everest. At that point my goal was to stay ahead of Ingrid, which kept things exciting for me because she was only a few seconds back. I think I did a good job of really letting loose on the hills and occasionally throwing in some bursts of speed on the turns. My time today and at Cass were both slower than last year and sophomore year, but I'm not too worried because I think I can do better when we start racing for real.
