Portage Glory Days 5K

October 7, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 60s and a bit rainy

Comments:
Today, I drove down to Portage with Liz, and I ran the good old Portage Glory Days 5K. I decided on Wednesday to run it, so I wasn't planning on racing, but it was a fun. I got to see my family, see my sister and cousin race, and see some people I hadn't seen in a while.

Charlotte, the Montgomerys, Austin, Jager, TJ, and I all came to the meet, so we started together. I gave a solid speech to everyone (nothing as hype as BJ though). My highlight point was "we peaked in high school, so let's do it for the glory days!". (I don't think any of us actually peaked, but just by being at this race we did).

The race went out very fast. The top 4 guys went out in sub 4:50. I didn't want to go as fast, but still got dragged to a 5 minute first mile. I was feeling pretty tired from the beginning, from just not getting adequate sleep. The hills were also a bit tougher than I remembered, so ripppp.

I hit mile 2 in about 10:30. At that point, I just had to use the bathroom really bad, and I was completely on my own. One of the top guys had dropped hard, but I got passed by someone else. I definitely was slowing down and feelin the burn.

My last mile was probably my worst, but I survived. I finished in 16:53 which would tie my 5K PR from Grand Classic last year (and this was a tougher course). So ya know, I was in my normal 16:50 range, but definitely not a horrible race. I didn't go in feeling the best, still remained consistent so I was decently happy.

Extra highlights:

1. At mile 1.5, my old high school coach yelled "Wow VanPelt, did you get slower since high schoo?!". Mr. Price is a legend.

2. Austin mentioned to me that he overheard a GVSU running club guy say something along the lines of "Dude, NIRCA RVP is racing here". Definitely not fast enough to earn the NIRCA title, butttttttt as I told Lucas, I'm gonna let it get to my head.

3. Liz is convinced Kyle (a kid on Western's running club who I actually met only once 2 year ago) has a huge man crush on me. So, competition man!!!!!

Also running log shoutouts to Austin, Peter, Charlotte, Amanda, Bailey, and TJ! Y'all had some great races!
