I am an idiot

June 19, 2018 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I realized the moment I arrived at the track for a BAA club workout that I hadn't eaten or drank anything all day. No matter, I thought. I'm a grown-up. I know how to listen to my body. I can tell the difference between normal running tiredness and the symptoms of dehydration. If I feel faint, I'll just stop, rest, and walk slowly home.

Instead, I managed to pull a hamstring. For the first time ever. I had run 1000m, 600m, 1000m, 600m, and two 150s when suddently about 1/3 of the way into the third 150 I felt a pop in the back of my leg halfway between the butt and the knee. My mind immediately knew that taking even one more step on that leg could make it a lot worse so I hopped on the other leg for one stride and then promptly fell down onto the track. My teammates glanced back in concern and horror as I yelled and explicative but then yelled "I'm fine, keep going!" I got up right away unhurt from the fall but clearly unable to run and began a slow walk back to the start line. It wasn't painful when I wasn't walking and only mildly painful (more of a super tight sensation) when I did, but even one step of a light jogging motion felt like I was straining it, so I rested and walked home. Such a bummer! It was like 80 degrees and I was plenty warmed up from all the pickups prior to that, so my only conclusion is that dehydration must have made my muscles more vulnerable than usual. On the "bright" side, this will force me to rest up the other two nagging pains in my Achilles and back of the knee that have been pestering me for two weeks now...
