Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I think this was my favorite race I've ever run. I normally go into races extremely nervous, but this was definitely different. I was more unmotivated than nervous for the hours leading up to this race, which was a pretty unprecedented feeling.
Naturally, I was a little anxious while warming up and at the start line, but I was just imagining how happy it would be to FINISH the race. As soon as the gun went off I quickly turned my unmotivated feelings into a drive to push myself. I spent the first 800m weaving around girls so I could get up to one of the front packs. I knew that if I started the first half of the race in the middle or back of the pack I wouldn't be able to gain the motivation to work my way up to the front later in the race.
right before the mile #1 I caught a leaf. Now, I'm sure it's not a big deal for a lot of GDS runners to catch leaves or even attempt to catch them during races, but for me this was a really big moment. For the past 3+ years I've run most of my races with intense focus and freaking myself out about perfect pacing. So the fact that I dove for a leaf during a race shows me that I'm really changing as a runner.
I ran my first mile in 6:27. Way too fast, I know. But I felt good. I didn't feel out of breath and I was about 20th in the race at this point. I didn't freak out when I was passed by 3 girls on the first hill because i ended up passing a total of 5 girls on the downhill. I felt really good. I'm sure I was slowing down, but I felt entirely in control of my breathing, form, and pace for the whole second mile. I passed 4 girls during the death march and even smiled when a bunch of GDS people were cheering. The last mile was definitely rough, but I kicked at the end and ended up finishing 11th. There was never a point during this race where i doubted myself and thought that I couldn't keep going. I ended up running only a few seconds off from my time last week at DCXC. This race has put me in a really good mood, and I'm even more excited third battle.
