Exercise Type: Run
Weather: very hot
Comments:
took the mock ACT this morning and was driven over to DCXC by Annie's mom. It was me, Annie, Corbin, and Benji in the car. We talked about racing and past experiences on this course. Oh and the fact that Benji has never eaten a pickle or strawberries. Then we got there.
We jogged around right behind the freshman B boys race I think to go partway around the loop. I felt good during the warmup jog except my legs were very hot in sweats. But overall I was super excited to run. The race looked kind of scary because there were a lot of dips and it was pretty uneven and sandy, but I didn't really think about it. Annie and I walked around for a while, watching the races and eventually found Ella, Camilla, and Sophie. We talked with them and ate some food before the race. I had a turkey sandwich (which I actually ate in the car) and carrots. I had some Gatorade and I was slightly worried that I was dehydrated because during the ACT, even though I had a water bottle, I wasn't very focused on hydrating. We watched some amazing races and made some tiktoks. And Ella and I entered the dancing competition 10 minutes before our warmup, so we had to leave in the middle and that's why we didn't make the finals NOT BECAUSE OUR DANCING WAS BAD. Anyway, we took another bathroom break and then started the warmup. Arya, Camilla, Tabitha, EJ, Annie, Ella, and I went on a warmup jog for around 5-6 minutes then did dynamics on the track. Overall I felt fine on the warmups, It was quite hot and humid so I felt tired from that. We put on our spikes and jogged to the start line. We were only able to do 4 striders because the announcer person told us to line up earlier than we were expecting. But we still did a hurdle and our "run goods."
After the guy explained the start three times, the guy blew the whistle as an "on your marks" when the girl a few people next to me false-started even though she was the one who made the guy repeat the instructions. Anyway then the gun fired and we started running. I kind of decided that I wanted to run with Annie because I still wasn't very confident on my pacing abilities. So I ran with her. The hardest part of the race, for me, was probably the first mile because I kept doubting how fast we should be going. But we ended up being fine. As we passed the first-mile marker I stuck out my finger to high five Annie which is something we used to do in middle school after we finished any number of laps, we would high five (but with the number of laps, or in this case miles, we had finished). I saw someone across the field wearing a green uniform and had light curly hair, It must be Ella I thought. She got closer and closer to us, well I guess we got closer to her. And I was certain we were running right behind Ella. I was concerned because I was thinking, how could we be this close to Ella? How fast are we going? I was very confused why our whole team was not cheering for her as she passed the groups of GDS cheerers. I was thinking about all this for around a mile and a half trying to get to Ella. I was very seriously considering yelling out for her during the race. I really really thought it was her. Well as we got closer I realized that this girl's hair was kind of short, and her hair was in ribbons. Was Ella wearing ribbons? and she had green spandex, no this isn't Ella Giseppi! let's pass her! we end up passing her (i am still with Annie) and there is less than a mile left!! There were a few moments in the race where I kind of just pushed for no reason so that was weird. Also, my Achilles was hurting a little bit. As I was going around the S curve on the final lap I was deciding whether to push or not, how close is the finish line? is it too early? well, I started picking up the speed and started running down the last straight away before the track, or so I thought it was the last straight away before the track. I look up and see that the tents in the infield are quite small... I'm still far away from the track, well no use in slowing down now. I just kept running until I got to the track when I just sprinted. It was kind of weird running around the opposite direction of the track but it's fine. I passed a few people in that 200 and as I was turning to the last straight away on the track I saw someone in front of me so I sprinted a little faster and as I was passing her she sped up a little and we both kind of leaped into the finish line which felt like it was the end of a 400, not a 5k. Well, I thought I had caught her but mile split does not. well, I got water and turned around because I heard cheering for GDS and got to hug Annie. Then we waited to see the GDS runners cross the line, lots of hugging and getting water. I think I went back to that water table three times, each time I asked if they minded that I take another and they said I could take as many as I want. I poured some over my head and drank some. We walked over and found Ella taking a picture for the top finishers SHE GOT 8TH wow! then we listed for the top 25 and we heard "IN EIGHTH PLACE ELLA...GI...GISSEPPI" and we were very happy about that since before the race we predicted that would happen.
We cooled down and watched some more races. Charlie Baar made me run across the whole course to see the finish of the varsity boys race at the 11-minute mark, so we waited there for a while, he seemed to be very excited. we watched a crazy 15:15 time from someone then we cheering for all the GDS runners. Very exciting day.
I also came home and went on miles split, did a few calculations and found that GDS junior girls A got 4th place!!! very cool. Oh and I PRed today which is exciting. good night!
