The Coach Who Ruins Friendships

October 29, 2019 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I tossed a lit match into a dry haystack this afternoon by asking Camillia, Ruby, Ella, and Annie to rank themselves from most mature to least and then casually walking off in the other direction. Ninety minutes later they were still arguing over it. Had I been secretly trying to prove a point about their collective maturity rather than merely sowing chaos and discord, I think the length of this argument would have proved it. I also mentioned off-handedly to Nathaniel that most of Abby's leaves are in fact fluff balls. Apparently Nathaniel hadn't gotten the memo that this is legal. This basically set off a riot-like situation, not unlike the Nats manager (Nathaniel) trying to accost the home plate umpire who made that crazy interference call (Abby) and having to be physically restrained by all his teammates (thanks guys). Fortunately, Nathaniel did not get ejected from the run as a result and GDS is still going to win on Saturday.

Anthony and I were serenaded on the way over the AU by some very talented chorus singers who apparently can stay on pitch and on pace at the same time. Impressive! Had fun getting my butt kicked in striders by Lucy Vogt at AU and then pacing her, Ana-Sophia, Ethan Wolin, and Luke Flyer, Caleb Rosenman, Natasha Zimyzimzim, Alex Green, and Leah Belber for some even longer striders at the Turtle Park soccer field, which Anthony pointed out has an uncanny resemblance to the surface of Glenelg (muddy, grassy, smooth... magical).

Abby and I are still unsure whether plastic is organic since it comes from petroleum which comes from dinosaurs/trilobites/lycopods which were once living and made of carbon. It doesn't really come from those things, but I like any excuse I can get to use the word lycopod; it's my favorite extinct plant. Do you have a favorite extinct plant? If you don't have one, you can borrow mine. They're really cool. Some were as tall as giant trees and they fell over if you pushed them (at least that's what I remember Bill George or CA telling us 16 years ago). I should have asked CA to resolve the is-plastic-organic question for us when she stopped by the wrestling room at the end of practice, but I got too caught up in recounting to her and Lucy Vogt how there was this really unfairly ambiguous multiple choice question on her AP Enviro test back in the fall of 2002 about how cheetahs became fast. CA finally admitted it may not have been a great question. Success! Was Lucy even born in the fall of 2002? Probably not. All this matters because if plastic is organic, then frisbees count as leaves.
