Districts Delights!

October 22, 2010 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: SUNNY!

Comments:
Whenever I run with someone, I feel like I suck the running will out of them. When I really stick to someone that happens, not when I'm running past them or trying to get to them, but when I'm really with them, they get the running sucked out of them like a dehydrated baby sucks on a bottle.
I started running the way I normally do, and this time I wasn't sucked too far back into the bottleneck, except this time I didn't have as much drive to get up to where I would normally be, so I didn't push it as much. A little bit before the mile 1 mark, Ryan Nielson, my old best friend from freshman year that moved to Mountain View, ran up alongside me. It has been almost 2 years since I last talked to him, I knew he was there, I saw him during the warm-up, and I said to myself, "I AM beating him." So for the last week I said to myself, "A good quote to put on running-log would be, 'This race I'm going to run toward something, not away from something.'"
So I tried it, and it worked according to my ACTUAL time of 19:59, not the time the stinkin' Districts people put on the paper of 20:11. So instead of running to keep Brady behind me, I forgot about him and decided to catch up to Ryan and beat him. For a while I trailed behind him a few feet, then I got ahead of him a few feet, then the cycle continued until the finish, where I sprinted ahead of him with 100 meters to go and beat him by 5 seconds. Austin Wrem beat me by one step, but I decided to let it go. Brady beat me by 14 seconds, but I decided to let that one go too. I wanted to break 20 minutes, and when I say the clock hit 19:54 with a few meters to go I really kicked it in, and crossed the finish line right at 19:59. I don't care what the dumb papers say, I know I beat 20. I know I ran towards my goals, instead of away from my competition.
