Hard effort.

February 12, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: cool and sunny. got started about 7 am, felt good to be done so early

wasn't sure I was going to be able to make myself do this, but i rolled out of bed, got some b-fast and drove out to the park. there weren't a whole lot of people there and everyone knew each other, so it was a little awkward at first. the mile warmup was nice, chatted a bit with some people, seemed like there may be a few people worth running against.

Got to the start line still figuring I'd just do 2 miles since i'm just getting back into it, we took off and there were three guys who were really moving, one of them had said he was doing the full 5 mi, so i figured I had better at least get up with him while I had him to run against, once i caught up I started feeling pretty good, rolled just a bit past him and when I got to the 2mi turn around I still felt good, so decided to go to three, by 1.5 I was way in the lead and still feeling good, so i figured i'd push until the 4 mi turn, they forgot to mark it though, so i ended up doing the whole 5 miles, haha.

Really pleased with the results though, definitely started falling off a bit in the last mile and a half or so, picked it up with half to go and finished in 29:59. I'd say sub-6 pace for a distance that is about as long as all my training runs right now isn't bad for 3 weeks in. I'm pretty happy.

lots of people talked to me after, sounds like there are a couple of groups that meet up for longer runs and some speed work (though really, really early in the morning, so i'll have to see where they're at and whether it's feasible for me to jump in yet) and the guy who was in second told me about a website like facebook for runners, so i'm going to check that out to see if I can hook up with anyone for some training runs in the near future.

Went to the homebrewers meeting afterward and got a little tipsy off of just a few beers because i was so dehydrated, haha. overall a good day for finally meeting a good number of people with my interests though. I'm excited.
