callaway gardens sprint triathlon

June 19, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
i was a little disappointed because today's triathlon is shorter than last week's, but it's father's day, and i got to do this one with my dad, so it was nice. I decided to merge the race synopses, for ease of reading, but I'll add the other logs with no description.

PRE-RACE: didn't sleep great last night because my phone died, and i kept waking up, afraid that i was going to miss the race. we got to the park a little late, but weren't terribly rushed to prepare. the lines for the bathroom were way too long, so i started my warmup, making a point to stop along the way. dropped off my shoes and shirt in transition, then finished the warmup along the beach towards the swim start.

SWIM: followed the shoreline from one point on the beach to another. pretty shallow, very crowded. i started in the first wave, which was males 15-29, about 120 people. i tried to get up front, but i'm not as aggressive a swimmer, so i got caught up in the chaos of flailing legs and arms. somehow, i managed to avoid getting kicked in the face. i think it was slower than last week, even though it was a shorter distance.

BIKE: the bike course wound through the roads of callaway gardens, which would make for a beautiful leisurely bike ride. the roads were a little too curvy for me, so i slowed down some, for fear of falling. however, i think i passed more than passed me, and remained competitive throughout. i average 23mph, which seemed pretty good.

RUN: the course was pretty flat, concrete most of the way. i passed a bunch of people, but they were pretty spread out, so not a ton. should've started my kick earlier, so that i could pass the guy ahead of me, but it was too late. it was kind of like a long warm up, then a short tempo run. my legs felt real heavy starting the run, since i pushed it on the bike, but i was still able to run sub-6, which is encouraging.

cooled down through the park for about 4 miles while waiting for the others to finish. found some old train tracks that were no longer parallel. ran through a parking lot until i got bored.

OVERALL: i finished in 46:30, second in my age group, and 17th overall. for a large race, it's not too bad. i could definitely improve my swim and transition times, which were pretty atrocious, but overall, it felt like a good workout. i was tired afterward, but satisfied.
