Long/Short Invitational

September 24, 2011 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
27:19 (5:20,?,?,21:57,5:32). Felt pretty good during the race, but lacked the mental toughness needed to excel at times. The initial pace was comfortable, 3:20 for the first k, then 5:20 for the first mile. Stayed with the front pack as we got into the woods at 2.5k, then as the pack strung out I passed people who went out too hard. After we got through the woods I was feeling surprisingly good and felt like I was in a good position. I saw Max only a few seconds in front of me, and wanted to surge and catch up to him, but I wimped out and just maintained my pace. As I entered the long downhill, I started to open up my stride and get moving. At around the 6.5k mark, Steinbock of Dickinson passed me, but I also couldn't go with him. Around 800 meters to go, after I had been surging periodically as Brett and some Dickinson guys caught up to me, I picked it up and tried to kick. Joey from Goucher was in front of me and I dug down at the end to try and reel him in but I ran out of space. That was my fault for not starting earlier and it pissed me off.

Looking at the race as a whole, I was glad that I felt so good for most of this race considering that this was my highest mileage week (or would have been if I could have done the long run). I raced pretty well but I wimped out a couple times and I need to improve on that.

After the race, my heel, which had been bothering me since Wednesday (but getting progressively better until Saturday), got really bad. Clara was not too worried about it though so I hope it turns out ok and I don't have to miss too much time.
