This was my first track meet. And the first time running a serious 400. I knew I wasn't supposed to go all out. But pretty close to it. I got put in the third heat with two other guys. I was nervous starting off but I immediately shot in front of the other two. My first lap felt great. About half way through the second lap it got hard. When i got onto the last straight-away i saw 53:00 on the clock and got ready to kick it in. But about 25-50 meters from the finish line my hamstrings turned off. It was a bizarre feeling, I had never experienced this before. My quads were still strong and I thought I was going to fall. I thought if I dove through the finish I could go faster but I wasn't sure if that was sportsmanlike or legal so I slowed down almost to a jog in order to stay on my feet. My time was 60.62. I felt good about that time. But it drove me crazy because I knew I could have taken a lot of time off of that if I had just had a little more in my hamstrings for the kick.
