Master's mile

February 10, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Indoor at TJ Community Center

Comments:
We'll the time had come to test my legs. Never got butterflies or particularly excited. Even on the line, I was unemotional. I'd done some short warm ups over the previous two hours but was mostly focused on coaching and had no time for striders beyond 10 meters. They ended up running all the adult males in one race of "6:00min and under," rather than "40 and over."

The leader ran about 4:45 and the lead pack wasn't visible by the time I'd cleared the crowd of the second chase pack at the 800. Spent the first half working around a few guys one at a time as they let the pace drift above 40 second laps. By about the 800 I was leading that pack and alone. In the final 2.5 laps, I bore down on the three who were ~30 meters ahead and caught one of them on the final curve. Track was slick as always and the Hopper cheering felt good. Didn't feel particularly aggressive, meaning I ran conservatively (cowardly) and stayed within my comfort zone for the most part. I was pleased to be where I"d expected to be, time wise (had hoped to stay sub 5:20), but it would have been nice to have a pleasant surprise. It didn't sink in during the race how many 40+ laps I was running. Splits were a little unreliable since we ran a mile rather than a 1600. avg=39.53 per 220yd, 38, 39, (78), 41, 40 (81, 2:39), 40, 40, (80, 4:00), 39, 36 (76, 5:16.2) Satisfied, all in all. (And knees weren't on my mind during the race.) I let myself get talked into running for the PVTC at the Masters National Championships in mid March.
