This had to be my best track race ever. Coming in, I was seeded 13th and was running against TJ Hornberger and Mickey Burke. I just wanted to be within 200 meters of them. I did. I went 9:21.88. They were 9:12. Great day! When we got to the meet, John and I did a mile shakeout. We were told the race would be about 8:00 or 8:30, so we started to warm up at 7:15. The race didn't go off until 9:20. We got a ton in before the race, but that was a problem for everyone. Surprisingly, I stayed very calm and didn't get scared or worked up. When the gun went off, I got out really well. I stayed in the second lane for the first turn so I could get out in the front and be ready to move if I had to. I got out in second place, which was great. I wanted to be there to see the race. I stayed behind the first place guy for 300. Then, the waterfall came in and one guy was way out ahead. I threw in a surge to catch him and stayed on his shoulder for the first mile. He was rabbiting for Mickey and dropped off. Then it was off to the races, with a pack of 8-10 guys. First five splits were 67, 75 (2:22), 72, 72(4:45), 68. Apparently, I finished with 4 69s. A really good negative split, 4:45, 4:36. When the move came at 800, I was there to see it and tried to respond. I ended up coming in 7th place, but 3rd was only 2 seconds ahead of me. It was a very good day. Got the school record. John went 9:24 and set a 30 second PR and Brian and HurriKane went 9:56, setting a 25 second PR, so my 23 second PR was the worst 2 mile that day. Probably the happiest I've ever been.
