Oh what could have been. I didn't really know how my body would respond a week after running a half marathon. I figured I would just start out comfortably and see what happened. Well, after about a 1/2-mile, I found myself in 1st place and from that point until the homestretch, I led this race. It was a pretty unique feeling, being right behind the lead-bike and not knowing where the people behind me were.
I felt good through the first two miles and turned in really even splits (5:58, 5:59) - started to suffer a little bit in the last mile and was wondering if I had built up enough of a lead to hold up. I hadn't really looked behind me so I honestly didn't know if I had a minute lead or just a few seconds.
Sure enough, right as we came into the finishing chute, some guy caught me and try as I might, I didn't have what it took to take back first. I finished 1.3 seconds behind him. Initially I was a little bummed, but really it doesn't matter. It was a new PR for me by 3 seconds - I enjoyed leading the race for 2.5 miles and more than anything, I was happy by body allowed me to run the race and give a full effort.
