RTB 3rd leg

September 13, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 60ish?

Comments:
Sky fully illuminated by the time I ran. 7:30-8:30am. Maybe my best 3rd leg ever... Never panicked. I knew the course would have a few minor ups and downs, but they were never bad enough to take me out of my rhythm (this was also due to my new-found patience with hills.) I feel like every year in the third leg, i dread the hills at RTB and tighten up terribly on them. having low expectation and a willingness to decelerate on them meant I kept my form and momentum much better than i the past. It helped that there were no super steep hills except that unexpected one that was the final half mile to the exchange zone. I definitely attacked that one, thgouh, as I figured the end must be near. As with all three legs, i was thrilled with my pace and reached the exchange several minutes before I would have expected. I was trying to catch Thundersaurus the whole way as former hopper David Orellano had gotten the baton about 8-10 minute ahead of me, but it turns out he ran 58 minutes thanks to great coaching in high school and Hopper teammates like Mustang averaging 5:50s. I apparently opened up a nice time gap on the other Goat team during this leg as Bukeima's calves were hurting. I also made a decent attempt at a leaf about a mile in. It was a pleasant stretch of road which I'd run years ago, and I truly enjoyed myself, although these long legs really do seem to go on forever. For all three legs it was true that before I was halfway done each leg, I was in complete doubt that I'd be able to maintain my pace, and yet I did run very even, all in all. (Except the first leg which was more due to the downhills. five minutes after handing off, I dropped down and did 30 push ups to inspire Nate Suter. ...then the adrenaline wore off... A good swim in the freezing Atlantic at Hampton beach a few hours later and a pair of Bolocco burrito bowls kick started my recovery.

6:21 average for the 26.3 total miles over 15 hours. Took about two 5 minute restless naps and did it off of just 4 hours sleep Thursday night.
wore the DS trainers again... Feet=horrible and knees (right especially) = very unhappy

Yeah.. I'd do it again...
