Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 32 and setting sun
Comments:
All in all, it went surprisingly well despite the rubberized track. I sent people off on time, drove without traffic to the STA track, and even managed some running in place during final instructions plus six striders! I've not warmed up so thoroughly since the first year! I had almost convinced myself not to participate as I'd been limping all day due to my left foot arch issues, but once I began to jog, it felt much happier?! (The miracle of the green fruit of large pit?)
I was on a team with Isabel Boyer and an STA frosh sprinter who seemed very overwhelmed by the entire venture. Isabel led out and brought us through in the middle of the 18 team pack. We'd dropped to 13th or so when I took my first leg. I was passed by a couple on the first leg and passed one or two back. After that, I was usually catching the same two kids on later legs, but never really had anyone next to me who could focus me. Still, I was able to look at 200 splits and sometimes 100 splits to try and focus. I was a bit hesitant to push my luck with the left foot, but it never flared up and I did work pretty hard all in all. Quite satisfied with my effort, everything considered. Mostly, it felt like I hadn't done this kind of speed in half a year which is accurate. The surface was so much easier to run upon than the old cinders, but I missed them anyhow, having known that track nearly all my previous 42 years. I even got to cool down with two laps before driving a few people back to GDS on the bus. We finished in 11th place and I couldn't be more proud of our amazing team! We all earned turnips of tenacity in my book! foot feels fine afterwards and in the evening! Splits were accurate 400s (with running starts and finished after tagging off.)
