Last home meet ever. Crazy to think about it, I've had some great home meets at our track and I'll never have a race on that track again. Where does time go? Anyways got to the meet and conditions were like perfect, not much wind, cloudy, and around 60 degrees. I thought it was good weather for some good racing. Me, Ian, and Xander warmed up into fall creek, then got back and did drills and strides. I was staying relaxed and was ready to just have fun. Race strategy pre-race was to go out in 63 to set the tone then just race from there. I wanted to make the race fast because I knew our guys needed a fast race to hit the times we need for the 4xmile standard. I wanted to hit a decent time also so pre-race I decided that if I had to take the lead and do the work I would be okay with that if the race wasn't going as fast as I wanted it to go. I didn't know there was only one heat so I was late getting to the line. The race started and someone stepped on my foot so I didn't get the best start possible. After the first few meters I regained my composure and moved into first, then Quinn passed me about 150 in. We came through in 29-30, which was perfect. Then the pace started to slow 300 in so I took over. The next lap was a little slower. That was my fault and I could've pushed and gotten 2-3 seconds off of that lap. I was 63 for the first lap, then 67 for the second. So out in 2:10. I started pushing the third lap a little and Quinn passed me on the back stretch. I just wanted to hold onto him and make my move when I needed to. Got to the bell lap and I was just getting antsy, I should've been patient and waited just a little longer but I went with 350 left and had a good lead until I tied up with 100 left. I guess that happens when you start going 100 meters early. I just tied up that last 100. I wanted that win, but I was somewhat happy with my time. I know I could've taken two seconds off of each of my middle laps for sure. They felt too easy and I wasn't breathing hard at all. 4:22 doing most of the work is not a bad time. And I'm right where I was at last year. I know next week I'm completely ready to go 4:17 again. Today's race showed how fit I am and I felt like I had more. Ian and Xander ran great times which is exactly what I wanted out of them. We are literally like 4 seconds off the standard for nationals 4xmile and I know we can get it. I'm planning on having that be my main focus for nationals, I want All American. Xander ran 4:31 and hit the qualifying time for the freshman mile at nationals and Ian hit a great 4:33. I was happy with how we did as a team. Watched Silas and Noah race in the 800 afterward while we cooled down. They ran hard but made a few tactical errors. They went out hard but didn't have the best position for the last lap. Ben and Neil had pretty solid races in the 3200 also, especially Ben runnign around a 10:04 or so as an 8th grader. A little later our distance squad warmed up for the 4x400. I love hopping in the 4x400 when it's all distance its a chance to show our speed. I felt tired but I was just ready to run fast. We got to the line and were about to start when I forgot my black shorts were on instead of my red ones so I sprinted up to the stands and threw them on over my black ones. The race started and Noah didn't get out well but he made it up in the last 200 when everyone else was dying. I'm pretty sure he ran about a 53. Then Ian got the baton and looked pretty good keeping us in second where Noah had us he ran a 53 high. Next Xander went and he stuck right on the Binghampton guy and came in for 2nd when I got it in a 53. The guy I was racing was a 50 low guy so I knew I had my work cut out for me. I tried to stay as close to him as possible, he extended the lead on the backstretch and then I closed it a little in the last 150, I felt much stronger closing this 400 than I did in the mile, my form just felt good. Ran a 51 low, which might be my pr. Happy with our team's effort. We really just all ran hard and us distance guys stuck with all the sprinters. Came in second overall and we almost got DQ'd because Xander cut off some guys but it was all cleared up. I'm pretty sure we ran about a 3:31. Finished with some laps on the infield then a Boynton mile for our cooldown. Team got 3rd in the section and girls got 2nd. happy with how we did after how much our team has been through with literally half our team quitting. Full focus on running fast next week now.
