Got myself out of bed around 6:40 and out the door around 7:00. Ran up Cobblestone Hill to Cliff to Madaket Road tot he DPW gate at the far end of the dump. Turned there and ran back via town. I was feeling yesterday's race and suspect I hadn't fully rehydrated from that. I"d started off fairly conservatively in an early-morning style, but as I reached The Westmoore, another runner (who looked incredibly like a GDS parent) came onto the path one step behind me. I had to shift to an honest pace to avoid the awkwardness. As he hovered about 20 yards back I suspect for the next few miles, I was forced to maintain said honest pace. Based upon estimates, one timed mile on the way back in, and driving the route this afternoon when the girls and I drove to Madaket harbor I know I averaged 7:30s for the run. I was seriously fading though, by the end. Pace slacked a bit and I was getting sloppy and discouraged. Still, I got home without a break (other than a stretch two minutes in and a stretch at the turn around --where I was surprised to see my shadow had already turned back after he'd surged close to me at the start of the dump). Nice to have a quality steady run, but I was definitely running on empty at the end. Middle toes on the right foot were unhappy, maybe adjusting to the new shoes. Left knee was very unhappy in the early miles and for the rest of the day. The stride might have evened out once I was loosened up, but it was still irregular, as it has been all summer. Clearly the left knee is related to that. I've had a fair bit of muscle cramping in my legs and feet the rest of the day, which supports my theory of dehydration.
