Cayuga Lake Tri (Goodbye)

August 6, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: mid 60s

Comments:
I definitely am not as fast as I was last fall. That's not surprising, though, because I took a long break from running, and only picked it back up for this tri with my mom and step-dad.

I've decided not to cross country, and it's for a few reasons. First, I just don't enjoy running as much as I used to. Perhaps later in my life I might look forward to it (see Ultra-Marathon Man, by Dean Karnazes). I also have been having a great experience interning at the Ithaca Times, and will be continuing it into the fall as a paid freelance position. If I run XC, I would not be able to do this. I'm starting my career as a journalist right now, while running, for me, is just an activity. I'm not varsity quality right now, and wouldn't be this fall, no matter how hard I work. I worked really hard last cross season, but still was one of the slowest on the team, and barely improved over the course of the season. I guess after that, I felt a little discouraged, which led to my easing out of running. Running started to feel more like a chore for me, instead of something to look forward to when I wake up. I know it's not all smiles and fun, but there has to be at least some enjoyment present, right? My senior project at ACS is another reason, too. I will be leading a publication that features interviews/stories of four ACS alumni each month. This would take even more time out of my week, too. So between that, writing for the Ithaca Times, regular homework, college essays/apps, and other hobbies, I just don't see how cross fits into my schedule. And at this point, I don't have a running future past high school, so why not focus on the things that I do have potential in, right?

Anyway, I'll keep running occasionally, but I've also been playing a lot of basketball more lately, a sport that I enjoy. Best of luck to IXC this season. Goodbye, running log. I know no one probably read this, but I figured I'd just write it.
