Elmira dual tempo race thingy

September 19, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Hot as frick

Comments:
Started the day pretty well. Hard a large breakfast and lunch, and I was hydrating like crazy the day before, as well as before my race. I had my regular 3-hour-out clif bar and had a bagel as well. We had 1 hour to warmup the second we got off the bus, but I wasn't worried; we had warmed up in less time than that. After cheering on the girls, I got on the line and the gun went off. We started out at a good pace, being careful to not get caught up in the yelling and try to push it the first mile. Idk what our time was but I felt really smooth and fast. At this time we were the complete pack of Me, Noah, Xannies, and Ben, and that stayed until 2 miles into the race. I hit the second lap, and changed gears. Immediately, I felt different. I passed a whole group of guys, my eyes were up and searching, and my pace quicked. On one of the turns me and Ben got a bit pushed around and Noah got ahead. Since Baldwinsville has mad turns, I know that something very similar to this will happen, so I have to surge past and catch up to Noah and get on his shoulder. From there on out, Noah put a good 20 meter lead on us, and I couldn't see Xannies. Coming around the 2.5 mile mark, right where we start the small climb, I was still feeling good. I want to say it felt like the end of a hard workout, but not like a race. I think to some extent I was still tempoing. At the hill I started to put some distance between me and Ben, and I began to speed up. Then something weird happened. At the top of the little hill one of the Corning guys peeled off and I didn't try to catch him. This was boneheaded because I felt great, I totally have the speed to catch the guy, I just have no idea why I didn't. Noah didn't kick either, which was weird as well. This was something I learned last year, and I need to relearn this year. Next time I see a Corning/Burnt hills/anyothernerdthatthinkstheyaregoodbecausemilesplitandtullyrunnersinexplicablylikethemfornogoddamnreason guy in the last 800, I'm dusting that fool. Overall, my racing was so much better than Saturday. It wasn't only the drinking that helped, I also got on the shoulder of Ben and refused to give up, unlike last time. Now I have this feeling that I am so much more fit than my races have let on, and that there are certain things I have to do to achieve an actually good race. I need to look up during races, and headhunt people, as well as stick on people and outkick them. I am a big guy with long legs, and I seriously should be able to dust anybody in the last 400. I feel like all of my previous races haven't really been races, I fall asleep halfway through, then wake up with 400 left to somewhat kick, and I think Baldwinsville is the perfect time to change.
7/10 would kick next time

What I did well: I stuck with Ben, and beat his ass. That was a big goal for me, and I got it. I think my transition from tempo to race was good, and that my tempo lap was just right.

What I did poorly: I didn't make a move towards Noah at the 2 mile. Instead of sandbagging him, our pack needs to be up with the Ithaca guy who makes the move, and we need to continuously be switching leads and making moves. I also like didn't kick at all, which is a problem.

What I can improve on: I can work on making moves around corners. I tend to slow way down there, but in reality I need to be gapping people and passing right there. Plus I need to be able to learn when and how hard to kick, at least for the time being it would be helpful for someone to yell at me the last 400 to tell me to, but that is something I have to learn by myself.
