2017 Akron Half

September 23, 2017 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Sunny, 70s, Not too humid

Comments:
First off, great weather for a race day! Based on my training, and the several lags I had in it, I was hoping to just match last year's performance of 1:13:58.

The plan was to start around 5:50 pace and then bring it down to the 5:30s.

I started around 5:50 which felt ok, but once I was 3-4 in I could tell that bringing it down might be tough. So I tried, but was in the lower 40s. Once I got there my thought was to just hold it. Back through the city at 10K I was good with this...then we went out south towards firestone park. On the way back in, I felt good about my racing as I went with some others who came up on me. This stretch was mentally tough though with two multiple mile straightaways. I think I liked last year's course better during the second half.

Coming back into the city, I could have raced harder but my legs were having trouble on the strength side of things.

Finished with a time of 1:14:41 in 16th/7th in age group. I'm ok with this - would have liked to be quicker but with the lapses I had in training and not being too far off of where I was last year, this is alright. Looking at splits and pacing, I'm happy except for the last stretch. After the first 5.8, I was averaging 5:43 and was in 17th place. From 5.8 to 12 I averaged 5:41 and was in 15th. So I'm happy I didn't lose ground or slow down here. The last 1.1 I averaged 5:50 and did get passed by one.

So overall a good day and as usual a very pleasant racing experience at Akron. Good training season - but I want to improve in the next.
