Mount Tamalpais and then the Presidio

August 2, 2019 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 82 and sunny, then 67 and partly cloudy

Comments:
After flying to SF yesterday and taking the day off (even though I didn’t really need to), we drove up Mt. Tam today, parked in the parking lot of the East Peak and hiked with Si and my family up the final assent to the old observation tower. Sun was strong and the heat was noticeable after the constant fog in SF, but it was a great view and my first time there after all these years. After returning to the parking lot, Leah announced she was interested in running the .7 mile “accessible loop” on that contour line. I opted to go with her and Anna quickly joined us. We looped counter clockwise and finished in just under 8 minutes. Leah then chose to go at it again in the clockwise direction, and I joined her. That took just over 7 minutes. As they walked to the car, I took off down the railroad grade for a few minutes, cut out onto the road at the crossing and ran another few minutes up the winding hills toward West Peak until Si and the family passed me in the car and waited at a pull-off. My add-on was brisk, bu not too quick and only lasted 6 minutes brining my full run time to 21 minutes. I drove us down, pausing in Mill Valley for Slurpies and ice cream novelties for everyone except me. (I did taste my share of their treats, but wasn’t in the mood for my own as I was still full from our enormous Dim Sum lunch. As we passed through the Presidio and reached the peak of the ocean hugging road above the sand ladder, I decided I needed a bit more mileage for the day. I jumped out, leaving Si to drive them home and I ran a wandering route home, passing Baker Beach bunkers, and Lobo Creek trail and the former navy hospital before returning via 15th and Lake. Felt less fresh and good on this second run, and was particularly lethargic and feeble on the sandy stretches -several of which were uphills. Once home, I took about a 20 minute stretch of great quality on the grass in Si’s lovely backyard garden. Also did some clams and push ups.
