Last morning in Petaluma before driving to SF in afternoon and flying home Wednesday. Went out with a bandanna to cover my little bald head. Took Western to Chileno Valley Road,, overshot Helen Putnam Park intentionally for five extra minutes and doubled back. Entered park and paused for water and bathroom and to catch my breath which was totally ragged after the light hill up to the park. Looked at the map and chose the Aroyo trail as it seemed a good compromise between direct and looping. Within seconds of restarting I realized it was the trail that led directly up the steepest, sun-baked, dry , rugged, dirt trail to the high ground (550 Ft above sea level). It took me about 3 minutes, I think, to run up the 200 or so meter trail to the summit, and it was brutal. Steeper than any section of MD heights, by my memory. But, I managed it without any walking and was able to recover my breath on the subsequent downhills and shady trails. As I descended into the housing development, I opted to circle the water tower hill favoring mileage over another hill. I barely made it home. Legs were beat. Breathing felt like I was completely out of shape. Logging this on Friday night, I'm still, clearly paying a price for this run.
