Contusion and heat

July 26, 2020 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Low 90s and humid, noon sun

Comments:
Drove to Stub-her-Toes house at 11:30. Jogged half loop of the neighborhood and stretched for a few minutes. Five minutes in, I peeler of from Lauren, Leah B, and Hannah A to run Rock Creek, hoping I could motivate for an hour or more. Exploring the skinny, muddy trail north of Jones bridge and between the enchanted forest and the creek, I lost my footing on the second of a pair of fallen trees. Came down hard on my left quad across the horizontal trunk. Significant charlie horse pain, not to mention the usual “shake up” from falling. Started back up after twenty seconds of gathering myself, but left leg felt dead and it was hard not to limp. Adrenaline rushes lead to fatigue, and that hit fast. Heat and fatigue and pain built fast. Excited when STA boy from summer training called to me by name, but eventually decided this didn’t need to be a hour, or even 45. By the time I reached Connecticut ave, I was battling not to walk. Trudged up some side streets and directly back to Lauren’s where I joined the socially distanced gathering and swamped stories of the legendary Mustang. Iced the leg which helped reduce the swelling somewhat.

May have pushed my luck when I went ahead and played David in tennis at 3:30 pm, but despite some mighty tightness, I played well and beat him 6-4, before losing a random tie breaker 7-5. Nicely worn out after that. Also, long dog walks to start and end the day. Left quad is clearly usable, especially after warming it up, but it is incredibly painful to the touch. Disappointed not to have reached 30 miles this week, but with the day off, heat in the mid 90s, two sets of tennis and a nearly 40 mile bike ride, I can’t be too upset.
