21st Annual Alumni Run

August 19, 2023 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70s and low humidity... Beautiful!

Comments:
Had low expectations, but came away feeling pleased. Usual scant warm up of a few 50 meter jogs and 30 seconds worth of high knees and bounds. Didn't even manage a strider. Decided to wear the Saucony Endorphin Speeds because if I don't wear them, what's the point in having them. Now my solid time feels tainted.

Either way, went out trying to be very controlled and spent the first mile creeping up beside Gideon Siff. Hit the mile mark at 6:05 and lost a few steps to him on those stairs to the towpath. Over the next few hundred meters I caught back up and passed him as we were passing Cole Huh and Alex Bhatia. Ran the rest of the race alone with an eye to a distant Matt Simonson. Managed to stay pretty focused and was pleased I didn't have to hurt very much as there was no one to race. Finished strong and was pleased to see my fastest time since 2015. Of course, the 10 seconds I improved from last year were probably just shoe related, but it was nice to be feeling so controlled and smooth after several weeks of miserable, tired, achy runs. We had close to 100 people at the event running, walking, or cheering and that is always a joy for an old coach. Congrats to Dr. Eve Hoffman on her setting the new course record and to the alumni teams on their comfortable wins. The student teams are going to need to come ready to race next year.
