First leg of Reach the Beach

September 17, 2010 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 54 and dramatic shifting clouds and sunset/rising moon

Comments:
Opening leg at 6pm was 3.88 miles at 5:47 pace.  (Last year I'd averaged 5:58 on this leg.  First two miles  flat or slight downhill and last two miles up a gentle and then steep slope.  None too worse for wear except for several minor blisters and fatigue...waded into icy pond and later an icy creek in the following hour... made all the difference) First two miles I spent most of my time feeling heavy and lethargic on the downhill as I was passed early by a "Hello Kitty" and watched the other 5 teams from our final 4pm start wave pull away from me. Like every run I've done this summer, I needed two miles to loosen up. As I began the uphill slope in the final two miles I began to hit my stride and feel like I was strong. The final steep quarter mile really didn't phase me. Still, I wish I'd had the turnover to keep us in touch with the competition.
