Flew too close to the sun...
I was nervous beforehand, not really having prepared myself very well. I'd logged about 10 miles coaching at Salesianum... GDS was in 7 races, and that means 4.5 hours of essentially non-stop jogging and sprinting including the warm-up. Should've eaten a little something in the am and could have used some more sleep this past week.
Berenson and I started from my house at 7am going out Wisc. and Bradley and Fernwood, Democracy, Westlake, Tuckerman to Cabin John Trail. Trail to Canal, lock 5, Brookmont, Crescent, Little Falls Road, Williard, home. Not fresh on the way out. Last portions of the trail were up and down with lousy footing. Sent Mark ahead upon reaching the canal. hoped for water at lock 5... fountain=dry. Rather light headed up to Brookmont and legs gave out/went toxic at that point. Hose and a stretch gave me some relief. Pace had been 7:20ish with Mark, then 7:30 along canal, was now 7:45 and then 8 along crescent. Stretching breaks at Mass Ave. and River Rd. Maybe 9-10 minute pace up Williard to Running Co in hopes of finding water. Still closed at 10:15am. Staggered through Panera to bathroom sink for hot water and walked to Wisc Ave. "jogged" in from there and proceeded to eat everything I could find. Body was empty for those last 45 minutes. Longest run of my life. Closest I've been to death. By 2pm I felt normal again, but legs and body are certainly beat up.
All in all, I'm glad it happened now. I will respect the marathon distance from here on.
